Our history

We built the school we could not find.

Mockingbird began with one family’s search for early education that felt as important as early childhood actually is.

The search

A dozen tours. Still no “the one.”

Our oldest had just turned 18 months. She was ready for other children, and we were ready to find a school that put child development at the center of every decision.

We found plenty of care. What we struggled to find was a place that felt intentionally designed around the enormous importance of these years. The programs that came closest had long waiting lists. Too many other options felt like a place to leave children while adults worked, rather than a purposeful learning environment.

What if we created exactly what we were looking for, then built a community with families who wanted the same thing?

The idea becomes real

Five years, a set of twins, and one enduring conviction.

The question stayed with us. Through a growing family and a global pandemic, the idea became more specific: very low ratios, excellent teachers, small residential environments, serious attention to health, and a community where communication is proactive and honest.

In February 2023, our first student walked through the door. Today, Mockingbird is a licensed preschool serving toddlers through Pre-K in the heart of South Austin.

What has not changed

The original promises still guide us.

Growth matters only if the qualities that made Mockingbird worth building stay intact.

Small

Under 1:6 is the ceiling, not a marketing-day snapshot.

Serious

Early childhood educators deserve trust, support, and compensation that reflects their impact.

Human

Families deserve direct communication and teachers who know the whole child.

Purposeful

From lunch to learning materials, every recurring choice should serve development and wellbeing.

A note from Anthony

“Absolute best” is a practice, not a finish line.

We do not claim to have every answer. We do promise to care deeply, learn openly, communicate clearly, and keep improving alongside our teachers, our families, and our children.

Mockingbird exists because childhood is too important for autopilot. We are honored every time a family trusts us with a part of it.
